The Battle of Gettysburg was a major turning point in the American Civil War, fought from July 1 to 3, 1863, in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. It was the bloodiest battle of the war, with over 50,000 casualties. Union forces, led by General George G. Meade, successfully repelled the Confederate army under General Robert E. Lee. The defeat ended Lee’s attempt to invade the North and marked the beginning of the Confederacy’s decline.
