Description:
The atomic bombing of Nagasaki, Japan, took place on August 9, 1945, just three days after the bombing of Hiroshima. The United States dropped a second atomic bomb, nicknamed "Fat Man," on the city, resulting in the deaths of an estimated 40,000 people instantly, with the final death toll rising to over 70,000 due to injuries and radiation effects. Nagasaki was a major industrial center and port. The bombing caused massive destruction and, along with the earlier attack on Hiroshima, pressured Japan to surrender. On August 15, 1945, Japan announced its surrender, effectively ending World War II.
