Description:
The United States Navy was officially established on October 13, 1775, when the Continental Congress authorized the creation of a naval force to disrupt British supply lines during the American Revolution. The first ships of the Continental Navy were small and lightly armed, but they played an important role in challenging British control at sea. Although the Continental Navy was disbanded after the war, the need for a permanent naval force led to the creation of the U.S. Navy in 1794. Since then, it has grown into one of the most powerful naval forces in the world.
