Description:
John Brown’s Raid on Harpers Ferry took place on October 16, 1859, when abolitionist John Brown led a small group of followers in an attack on the federal armory in Harpers Ferry, Virginia (now West Virginia). His goal was to seize weapons and start a slave uprising across the South. The raid failed after U.S. Marines, led by Colonel Robert E. Lee, captured Brown and his men. Brown was later tried and executed for treason, but his actions increased tensions between the North and South and helped lead to the Civil War.
