Levi P. Morton (1824 - 1 920) was an American businessman and politician who served as the 22nd Vic e President of the United States under President Benjamin Harrison from 18 89 to 1893. Born in Vermont on May 16, 1824, Morton began his career in bu siness, making a fortune as a banker and financier. He was involved in sev eral successful business ventures, including the New York-based Morton, Bl iss & Company, which helped him build significant wealth.

Mort on entered politics in the 1870s, serving as a U.S. Congressman from New Y ork from 1879 to 1881. Afterward, he was appointed U.S. Minister to France (1881–1885), a diplomatic post where he gained experience in internatio nal affairs.
