William A. Wheeler was t he 19th Vice President of the United States, serving from 1877 to 1881 und er President Rutherford B. Hayes. Born on June 30, 1819 in Malone, New Yor k, he was a lawyer and politician known for his honesty and integrity. Bef ore becoming vice president, Wheeler served in both the U.S. House of Repr esentatives and the New York State Senate. He played a key role in the Com promise of 1877, which resolved the disputed 1876 presidential election. T hough not widely known today, Wheeler was respected in his time for his pr incipled leadership. He died in 1887.
