Description:

Hannibal Hamlin was the 15th vice president of the United States, serving from 1861 to 1865 under President Abraham Lincoln during the first term of the Civil War. Born on August 27, 1809, in Paris, Maine (then part of Massachusetts), Hamlin was a longtime politician who served as a U.S. Representative, Senator, and Governor of Maine. Originally a Democrat, he switched to the newly formed Republican Party in the 1850s because of his opposition to the expansion of slavery. Though he played a limited role as vice president, Hamlin was a staunch supporter of the Union cause. He was replaced on the ticket in 1864 by Andrew Johnson. Hamlin later returned to the Senate and also served as U.S. Minister to Spain. He died on July 4, 1891.
