 0th chief justice of the United States from 1921 to 1930 - the only person
  to hold both offices. He was born on September 15, 1857 in Cincinnati, Oh
 io into a prominent political family. Taft graduated from Yale University 
 and became a respected judge before entering national service. He served a
 s governor of the Philippines and U.S. secretary of war under President Th
 eodore Roosevelt. As president, Taft pursued antitrust actions, supported 
 civil service reform, and expanded the federal judiciary, but he faced pol
 itical rifts within the Republican Party. After losing reelection in 1912,
  he fulfilled his lifelong ambition by leading the Supreme Court, where he
  modernized its administration and strengthened the judiciary’s role. He
