Josiah Bartlett was an A merican physician, statesman, and a signer of the Declaration of Independe nce. He was born on November 21, 1729, in Massachusetts and later moved to New Hampshire, where he became active in colonial politics. Bartlett serv ed as a delegate to the Continental Congress and was the first to vote for independence after John Hancock. He later became the chief justice and th e first governor of New Hampshire under its new state constitution. Bartle tt died on May 19, 1795.
