Armstrong joined NASA in 1962 as part of the astronaut program and became a part of the Ap ollo 11 mission, which was the first successful mission to land humans on the Moon on July 20, 1969. He famously stepped onto the lunar surface with the words, "That's one small step fo r [a] man, one giant leap for mankind." Before becoming an astronaut, Armstrong served as a naval aviator and test pilot. He retired from NASA in 1971, later teaching aerospace engineering at the University of Cincinn ati. Armstrong passed away on August 25, 2012, leaving a legacy as a symbo l of human achievement and exploration.
