Florida secedes from the Union |
Florida seceded from the Union on January 10, 1861, becoming the third state to leave the United States as tensions over slavery and states' rights escalated. Following its secession, Florida joined the Confederate States of America and contributed troops and supplies to the Confederate war effort during the Civil War. After the Confederacy's defeat, Florida was readmitted to the Union in 1868 during the Reconstruction era.
