Alabama secedes from the Union |
Alabama seceded from the Union on January 11, 1861, becoming the fourth state to do so as sectional tensions over slavery and states' rights intensified. The state joined the Confederate States of America, and the Confederate government was formally organized in Montgomery, Alabama, in February 1861. Alabama played a major role in the Civil War before being defeated and readmitted to the Union in 1868 during Reconstruction.
