Alabama seceded from the Union on January 11, 1861, becoming the fourth state to do so as sectiona l tensions over slavery and states' rights intensified. The state joined t he Confederate States of America, and the Confederate government was forma lly organized in Montgomery, Alabama, in February 1861. Alabama played a m ajor role in the Civil War before being defeated and readmitted to the Uni on in 1868 during Reconstruction.
