Louisiana seceded from t he Union on January 26, 1861, becoming the sixth state to do so as conflic ts over slavery and states' rights intensified. It joined the Confederate States of America and was strategically important because of the Mississip pi River and the port of New Orleans. After the Civil War, Louisiana went through Reconstruction and was readmitted to the Union in 1868.
