West Virginia became the 35th state of the United States on June 20, 1863, during the Civil War. It was formed when several northwestern counties of Virginia chose to break away after Virginia seceded from the Union. West Virginia is the only state to form by separating from a Confederate state. Known for its mountains and coal mining history, its capital is Charleston. The state played a key role in the Civil War and in America's industrial growth.
