Louisiana seceded from the Union on January 26, 1861, becoming the sixth state to do so as conflicts over slavery and states' rights intensified. It joined the Confederate States of America and was strategically important because of the Mississippi River and the port of New Orleans. After the Civil War, Louisiana went through Reconstruction and was readmitted to the Union in 1868.
