Kansas, the thirty-fourth state |
Kansas was the 34th state to join the United States, admitted to the Union on January 29, 1861. Located in the central Great Plains, it played a key role in the nation's struggle over slavery before the Civil War, earning the nickname "Bleeding Kansas" due to violent clashes between pro- and anti-slavery settlers. Today, Kansas is known for its agriculture, particularly wheat production, and its contributions to American history and industry.
