Atomic Bombing of Hiroshima, Japan |
The atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Japan, occurred on August 6, 1945, during the final stages of World War II. The United States dropped the first atomic bomb, nicknamed "Little Boy," on the city of Hiroshima, resulting in the deaths of an estimated 70,000-80,000 people instantly, with tens of thousands more dying later from injuries and radiation exposure. The bombing devastated the city and marked the first use of nuclear weapons in warfare. It was followed by a second bombing on Nagasaki three days later. These bombings contributed to Japan's surrender on August 15, 1945, effectively ending World War II.
