John Tyler |
John Tyler was the 10th President of the United States, serving from 1841 to 1845. He was born on March 29, 1790, in Charles City County, Virginia. Tyler became president after the death of President William Henry Harrison, just 31 days into Harrison's term, making him the first vice president to ascend to the presidency due to a death in office. Before becoming president, Tyler had a long political career, including serving as Governor of Virginia, a U.S. Congressman, and Senator. His presidency was marked by significant events, including the annexation of Texas, which led to tensions with Mexico and eventually the Mexican-American War. Tyler faced challenges within his own party, the Whigs, who were divided over his policies. After leaving office, he returned to Virginia, where he was later elected to the Confederate Congress during the Civil War. Tyler died on January 18, 1862.
