Robert E. Lee (1807 - 1870) was an American military officer best known for commanding the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia during the American Civil War. He was born on January 19th, 1807. Before the war, Lee served in the U.S. Army and was regarded as a skilled officer. After the Confederacy’s defeat, He supported reconciliation and later became president of Washington College (now Washington and Lee University).
