Joseph Hewes (1730 - 1779) was an American merchant and statesman from North Carolina and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Born on January 23, 1730., he served in the Continental Congress and was instrumental in organizing the early American navy, helping to secure naval support for the Revolutionary War. Hewes devoted much of his life to the cause of American independence.
