William Tecumseh Sherman (1820 -1891) was a prominent American Civil War general known for his ruthless tactics and significant contributions to the Union victory. Initially serving in the U.S. Army before the war, Sherman rose to national prominence as the general of the Union army in the Western Theater. His most famous campaign was his "March to the Sea" in 1864, where he led a devastating march through Georgia, capturing Atlanta and then marching across the state, destroying Confederate infrastructure and resources. Sherman's strategies were key in weakening the South's ability to continue fighting, and his approach to total war marked a turning point in military tactics. After the war, Sherman served as Commanding General of the U.S. Army and was an influential figure in the post-war period.
