Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865) was the 16th President of the United States, serving from 1861 until his assassination in 1865. He is best known for leading the nation through the Civil War and preserving the Union. Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, which began the process of freeing enslaved people in Confederate states. His leadership during the war and dedication to equality and liberty have made him one of the most revered figures in American history. He was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth while attending a play at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C.
