First President (1789-1797)
George Washington (1732 - 1799) was the first President of the United States, serving from 1789 to 1797. A prominent military leader during the American Revolution, he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army and played a crucial role in securing American independence from Britain. After the war, Washington helped shape the new nation, presiding over the Constitutional Convention of 1787 and later becoming the country's first president. Known for his leadership, integrity, and commitment to republican values, Washington set many precedents for the presidency and is often called the "Father of His Country." He retired after two terms, setting the standard for future presidents, and died at his estate, Mount Vernon, in 1799.
