Description:

Lucretia Garfield (1832 - 1918) was the wife of James A. Garfield, the 20th President of the United States. Born in Garrettsville, Ohio on April 19, 1832, she was well-educated and a strong advocate for women's rights. Lucretia married James Garfield in 1858, and together they had seven children. As First Lady, she focused on education and social reform, while also being deeply involved in her husband's political life. After James Garfield was assassinated in 1881, Lucretia faced the tragedy with resilience. She lived for another 37 years, becoming a respected figure in her own right, and she continued to advocate for education and women's suffrage.
