James Monroe (1758–1831) was the 5th President of the United States, serving from 1817 to 1825. Born in Virginia on April 28, 1758, Monroe was a prominent figure in American politics, playing a key role in the nation's early history. Before becoming president, he served as a U.S. Senator, Governor of Virginia, and U.S. Minister to France and the United Kingdom. He was also Secretary of State and Secretary of War under President James Madison during the War of 1812.

Monroe's presidency is best known for the Monroe Doctrine, a key foreign policy statement issued in 1823. The doctrine warned European nations against further colonization or interference in the Americas, asserting that any such actions would be considered acts of aggression against the U.S. Monroe also presided over a period known as the "Era of Good Feelings," marked by political harmony and economic growth following the War of 1812. He retired after his presidency and remained an influential figure until his death in 1831.
