Harriet Lane (1830 - 1903) was the niece of James Buchanan, the 15th President of the United States, and served as First Lady from 1857 to 1861. Born in Mercersburg, Pennsylvania on May 9, 1830, she became an orphan at the age of 11 and was raised by her uncle, who never married. When James Buchanan became president, Harriet, at the age of 27, stepped in to fulfill the duties of First Lady, as he was a bachelor.

Harriet Lane was known for her grace, charm, and social skills. She played an active role in hosting official events, state dinners, and social gatherings at the White House, becoming a popular figure in Washington, D.C. Her time as First Lady was marked by her youthful energy and involvement in various causes, including promoting education for women.

After her time in the White House, Harriet Lane led a private life, marrying a prominent Baltimore banker, Henry Elliot Johnston, in 1866. She was involved in philanthropy and remained a respected figure in society until her death in 1903.
