Description:

Born on July 25, 1941, Emmett Till was a 14-year-old African American boy who was brutally murdered in Mississippi on August 28, 1955. His murder became a key moment in the Civil Rights Movement. While visiting relatives, he was accused of whistling at a white woman. Days later, he was kidnapped, beaten, and murdered by two white men, who were later acquitted by an all-white jury. His mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, chose to have an open-casket funeral to show the world the violence done to her son, sparking national outrage. Emmett Till’s death became a symbol of racial injustice and helped inspire the fight for civil rights in America.
