Benjamin Harrison |
Benjamin Harrison was the 23rd President of the United States, serving from 1889 to 1893. A grandson of President William Henry Harrison, he was born on August 20, 1833 in Ohio and became a successful lawyer and Civil War brigadier general. As president, he supported protective tariffs, strengthened the Navy, and signed the Sherman Antitrust Act to curb monopolies. His administration also admitted six new states to the Union. Though he lost his bid for re-election to Grover Cleveland, Harrison remained active in public life and law until his death in 1901.
