Georgia secedes from the Union |
Georgia seceded from the Union on January 19, 1861, as tensions over slavery and states’ rights intensified in the United States. The fifth state to seced from the Union, Georgia, state joined the Confederate States of America and became an important center for Confederate industry, agriculture, and military operations during the Civil War. After the Confederacy’s defeat, Georgia was placed under Reconstruction and was readmitted to the Union in 1870.
