Texas seceded from the Union on February 1, 1861, becoming the seventh state to do so amid rising tensions over slavery and states' rights. It joined the Confederate States of America and played a key role in the Civil War through its agriculture, military contributions, and strategic location. After the Confederacy's defeat, Texas underwent Reconstruction and was readmitted to the Union in 1870.
