On July 2, 1937, pioneering aviator Amelia Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, disappeared over the central Pacific Ocean near Howland Island during their attempt to fly around the world. Earhart was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic and was internationally famous for her aviation achievements. The pair lost radio contact during a challenging leg of their journey, and despite a massive search effort, no trace of them or their plane was ever found. Their disappearance remains one of the greatest mysteries in aviation history.
