The British occupied Savannah, Georgia, on December 29, 1778, during the American Revolutionary War. British forces captured the city to gain control of the southern colonies and establish a strategic base for operations in the South. The occupation lasted for more than two years, during which Savannah became a center of Loyalist activity and military planning. The city was eventually retaken by American and French forces in 1782.
