Description:

The Battle of Chancellorsville was fought from April 30 to May 6, 1863, during the American Civil War. It took place in Virginia, near the village of Chancellorsville, and was a major victory for the Confederate Army, commanded by General Robert E. Lee, over the Union Army led by General Joseph Hooker.

In the battle, Lee, despite being outnumbered, executed a brilliant tactical maneuver. He divided his forces, sending General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson on a flanking march to attack the Union right. The surprise attack overwhelmed Union forces, and the Confederates were able to inflict heavy casualties.

However, the victory came at a great cost. General Stonewall Jackson was accidentally shot by his own troops during the battle and died of complications from his wounds a few days later, which was a significant blow to the Confederate Army.

The Battle of Chancellorsville is often considered one of Lee’s greatest victories, but it also marked the beginning of the decline in Confederate fortunes, as the loss of Jackson was a severe blow to the leadership of the Army of Northern Virginia. For the Union, the defeat was another setback, and it led to the retreat of Union forces back toward Washington, D.C. The battle set the stage for the Battle of Gettysburg, which occurred later that year.
