Description:

Daniel D. Tompkins was an American politician who served as the sixth Vice President of the United States under President James Monroe from 1817 to 1825. Born on June 21, 1774 in New York, he was also Governor of New York from 1807 to 1817. During the War of 1812, Tompkins used his own money to support the war effort when state funds were low, which led to financial troubles later in life. Despite his contributions, his vice presidency was marked by poor health and debt. He died in 1825.
