Edith Roosevelt was the First Lady of the United States from 1901 to 1909 as the wife of President Theodore Roosevelt. Born Edith Kermit Carow on August 6, 1861, in Norwich, Connecticut, she grew up in New York and was a childhood friend of Theodore. They married in 1886. As First Lady, Edith brought structure and dignity to the White House, overseeing its renovation and expansion, including the creation of the West Wing. Known for her intelligence, discretion, and strong character, she played a key role in managing the large Roosevelt family and supporting her husband's political career. Edith Roosevelt died on September 30, 1948.
