Lucy Hayes was the wife of Rutherford B. Hayes, the 19th president of the United States, and served as First Lady from 1877 to 1881. Born on August 28, 1831, in Chillicothe, Ohio, she was well-educated and deeply religious. Known for her warmth and strong moral convictions, Lucy was the first First Lady to hold a college degree. She supported causes such as education, prison reform, and the temperance movement. Nicknamed “Lemonade Lucy” due to her decision to ban alcohol from White House events, she brought a sense of dignity and purpose to the role of First Lady. Lucy Hayes died on June 25, 1889.
