Ellen Arthur |
Ellen Arthur was the wife of Chester A. Arthur, the 21st president of the United States. Born Ellen Lewis Herndon on August 30, 1837, in Virginia, she came from a prominent and cultured family. She married Arthur in 1859, and the couple had three children. Known for her musical talent and social grace, Ellen was well-liked in New York society. Tragically, she died of pneumonia on January 12, 1880, nearly two years before her husband became president. Although she never served as First Lady, Chester Arthur honored her memory during his presidency by keeping her portrait in the White House and having fresh flowers placed before it daily.
