Martha Jefferson |
Martha Jefferson, born Martha Wayles on October 19, 1748, in Virginia, was the wife of Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States. She came from a wealthy plantation family and was known for her education, charm, and musical talent. Martha married Thomas Jefferson in 1772, and the couple had six children, though only two survived to adulthood. She died on September 6, 1782, before Jefferson became president. Her death deeply affected him, and he never remarried. After her death, Thomas Jefferson was so grief-stricken that he reportedly destroyed all of their personal correspondence and her likenesses. A silhouette is believed to be the only likeness remaining of Martha Jefferson.
