Andrew Goodman was born on November 23, 1943, in New York City. He was a civil rights activist and a leader in the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), working to promote voter registration and racial equality in the American South. Goodman was one of three civil rights workers murdered on June 21, 1964 in Philadelphia, Mississippi, during the Freedom Summer campaign. His death drew national attention to the violent resistance to civil rights efforts and helped galvanize support for the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
